Bike Month - Every May.

David Byrne Bike Racks - In New York, celebrities ride bikes. Talking Heads' frontman David Byrne is one such selebrity. He has designed bike racks as art.

New York Bicycling Coalition - a voice for cyclists at the state level.

New York Bike Messenger Association - so many want to try, so few actually live the dream.

New York City Bicycle Film Festival - every year, the Fest returns in June for a great weekend of bike-related films and street art.

New York City Bike Shops - there is no shortage of listing available online. However, not all shops have a web presence and the same shops dominate the listings. Here's probably the most complete guide you can find online, courtesy of NYC.

New York City Cycling Map - New York City has somewhat of an excaptionalist streak, and the city government-produced cycling map is no exception. It is, in all modesty, the best city cycling map in America. You can download it as a PDF on this page or you can find it at a city shop.

PlaNYC - a blueprint for the next 20 years of New York City. Cycling plays a big role, including an 1,800-mile bike master plan.

Streetsblog - a blog, a news site, a community forum, and a hub of political activism devoted to making streets safer and increasing the us of homan-powered and public transportation.

Time's Up - "a direct action environmental organisation" Time's Up is a graasroots advocacy, taking their message to the streets.

Transportation Alternatives - the leading advocacy group promoting human-powered transportation in New York City. A great website, whether you need to get your bike into your office building or find a good lawyer.


Organized Bike Rides

Escape from New York - a ride that takes you across the George Washington Bridge to New Jersey. You choose between three routes, the longest of which is a century.

Montauk Century - ride east, young cyclist. This is a one-way organized ride out to the eastern tip of Long Island. If you do the full route, you ride 145 miles.

New York City Century - ride up to 100 miles within the five boroughs on one day. This ride typically takes place mid-September.

The Five Boro Bike Tour - the granddaddy of organized bike rides in New York City. This one has 30,000+ participants every year. The ride is typically the first Sunday in May.

Tour de Brooklyn - as it suggests, a ride around Brooklyn. Typically at the start of June.
